Holiday / Activity Overview:

The WALLED TOWN OF TRUJILLO is one of Spain's best kept secrets and dates back to 600BC, we stay in one of the finest of the 16th century palaces situated on the magnificent Plaza Mayor.
This ART HOLIDAY is suitable for all levels of experience, with an emphasis on sketching and painting in and around Trujillo. Possible subjects to work from are: the Plaza Mayor, an almost theatrical space surrounded by historic buildings, cafes and the bustle of people; the grand and intimate architecture of the town; the views from the town walls of the olive groves and the plain below; the atmospheric lanes lined with secret gardens - jasmine, cypresses and orange trees, the palace's private gardens and grand interiors.
As well as teaching to individual's experience and needs, Noelle will teach how to develop your sketches into paintings in the palace studio.
We ENJOY FINE FOOD AND WINE, lunching in the gardens by the pool and eating dinner on the large stone balcony overlooking the square.
An interesting aspect of this holiday is that we will be sharing the Palacio with a friend, Pippa Sharman, who is teaching a CREATIVE COOKERY COURSE based on the cultural connections between Iberic, Moroccan and Latin American cuisine. What could be better than food and art in the same place? Although we are running separate courses we will all meet for meals to share impressions and enjoy food and wine in a most convivial atmosphere.
We will also share TRIPS TO CACERES (a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage town with a medieval centre, and two contemporary art galleries) AND MERIDA (with the largest collection of Roman ruins outside of Rome and a superb Museum of Roman Art). Noelle and Pippa (who studied Art History at the Courtauld Institute, London) will share their knowledge about art and cultural history with the group.
Non-painting partners or friends can join Pippa's cookery course, or simply enjoy the trips, wonderful location, food and wine!

Your accommodation:

PALACIO PIEDRAS ALBAS is one of the finest mansions built by the conquistadors returning from South America in the sixteenth century. Situated on the maginificent Plaza Mayor, the large stone balcony offers unrivalled views over the square as you paint, or later as you enjoy your evening meal.
The palace is furnished in the classic local style. The impressive front door opens into a top-lit stone-flagged patio and staircase leading to a formal dining room and living rooms.
The walled gardens behind offer peace and seclusion, with a swimming pool and a large shaded dining area for al-fresco lunches.

About the local area:

Trujillo is approx 2.5 hours SW of Madrid in the province of Extremadura. Extremadura with its fine historic towns offers an enticing slice of unspoiled Spain. It is known for its wildlife, and birds come from all over Europe and Africa to breed. The walled town of Trujillo is perched on a hill overlooking a vast plain. Once home to the most powerful conquistadors, its architecture combines Moorish (with a splendid castle), Roman and the beautiful mansions and monuments built by the wealthy families of the conquistadors in the sixteenth century.

How to Get Here:

Nearest airports are Madrid or Seville. We can meet you at Madrid airport and provide return transfers for an additional £50 pp. Or you can travel independently to Trujillo - please ask for independent travel information when you book.
