Holiday / Activity Overview:

The BEAUTIFUL SIERRA DE MONTANCHEZ is an intimate landscape of small olive and fig groves, grapes and pasture. Scattered amongst it all are the extraordinary granite boulders of the region.
We will spend time in the landscape, walking along ancient paths and caminos sketching and painting the natural beauty of the area. Suitable for beginners as well as those with experience, Noelle will teach and demonstrate a variety of ways to look, sketch and gather visual information.
For beginners she will teach the basics of observational drawing and painting. Other tuition will include how to use composition and colour, exploring drawing and painting techniques, how to develop sketches into paintings away from the subject possibly using simplification and abstraction. Creative exercises will help free the imagination and encourage a different way of looking at your subject.

Guide / Holiday Course Tutor

Noelle Griffiths studied Fine Art at St Martin's School of Art, London 1978-82. She left London to live and paint professionally in Snowdonia, North Wales in 1985 and has taught art part-time since 1987. An experienced tutor, Noelle taught for the Open College of the Arts between 1989-1998, and still teaches a group of students from those days independently. Since 1998-present she has been course leader and tutor on the part-time Fine Art Degree Programme at the University of Wales, Bangor, as well as teaching courses from her studio and independent groups.
Noelle paints using acrylic, oil and watercolour, as well as making one-off and editioned artist's books. Noelle has exhibited her paintings and books widely since 1983, and has work in many public and private collections in UK, Spain and US. Her artist's books are collected by the National Library of Wales, British Library, V & A Musuem amongst others.
Since 2005 Noelle has spent time painting in Finca Acehuche, in the Sierra de Montanchez, which is where the course is based.

Your accommodation:

You can choose to stay in Finca Acehuche or Finca al-Manzil.
Finca ACEHUCHE is set in a walled 3 acre olive grove, tucked away amongst a varied landscape of olives, figs, grapes and pasture. There is a wonderful view of the Sierra de Montanchez with its Moorish castle and catholic abbey from its terrace. The house is simple and contemporary in style with a large covered terrace, which accommodates one of a number of shaded painting areas as well as space to eat and relax.
Finca al-MANZIL is a stunning venue, situated on the slopes of the Sierra de Montanchez and set in 22 hectares. Painted a deep venetian red, the style of the cortijo is a mix of traditional and modern, with a large dining area for evening meals. It is surrounded by hillside pasture with horses and donkeys. In one corner is a a wonderful swimming pool set in natural surroundings - a perfect place to relax.

About the local area:

Extremadura with its fine historic towns offers an enticing slice of unspoiled Spain. It is known for its wildlife, and birds come from all over Europe and Africa to breed. The intense clear sunshine and evocative birdsong mark the changing seasons. Exhuberant wild flowers with the sound of cuckoos and hoopoes in the spring and early summer. Changing colours lead to the harvesting of figs and grapes in late summer and the departure of the bee-eaters and golden orioles. The hilltop town of Montanchez is famous for its serano jamon, and many of the local villages specialise in making cheese and wine.

How to Get Here:

Nearest airports are Madrid or Seville. We can arrange to meet you at Madrid airport and provide return transfers for an additional cost of £50 pp. Or you can travel independently to Montanchez - please ask for independent travel information when you book.
