Course Overview
These courses are designed for both beginners and more experienced painters. The two tutors, Lewis Noble and Vince Tutton each offer a different programme dealing with the many varied ways of making paintings in the landscape. There is a magical atmosphere at En Olivier - the panoramic views of the rolling landscape surround this 17th century farmhouse with the Pyrenees and Montaigne Noir mountains in the distance, these views do not fail to inspire.

We have a number of courses planned for 2008:

Painting with Arthur Neal - May 20th - 28th 2008
Arthur will be painting at En Olivier and will be available for discussions and advice on your work each day and will give some evening lectures during your stay.

This is an ideal opportunity to work and learn alongside this popular professional artist. Work at your own pace outside in the landscape and in the studio and have his advice and comments about the ongoing paintings. The evening talk/discussions, sometimes with a DVD, will always prove to be informative.

Arthur is a well known British artist. He attended The Camberwell School of Art and has taught at The New Metropole, Folkestone and Maidstone College of Art, Foundation. He published and illustrated two books on the poetry of Edward Thomas and is an elected member of The New English Art Club. His work is exhibited widely in the U.K. and the United States.

Lewis Noble - Sketch, Paint and Collage - June 24th - July 2nd 2008
In this workshop we will spend part of the day drawing & painting direct from the landscape and then painting from those sketches. The workshops I do are mostly about generating an open attitude towards your work. You don’t have to continue working in this style, but everything different that you try can be incorporated and add to your own style of painting & drawing.

Energy is what we are after, letting the spontaneity of the marks to be interesting in their own right. Hopefully this will lead to a collection of sketches that can be used to inform the paintings we do. I like to think of the process of painting as being much more than just putting brush to canvas. The collection & use of sourced material is essential but in order to create a painting that is more than a representation of the landscape we must allow the painting to exist in its own right using the ideas generated and emotions experienced.

In recent years Lewis Noble has focussed exclusively on painting the landscape. Working with the landscape provides the opportunity to experiment with ‘pure painting’ whilst retaining an essential grounding in observation. He creates clear, defined bodies of work, exploring his chosen subject through changing emotions, movement, light & colour. In 2001 he was the winner of the first National Vickers Art Prize. As such he was afforded the opportunity to be Artist in Residence at prominent locations around Derbyshire including Chatsworth. Lewis works in a small White Peak village where he lives with his wife & three children.

Vince Tutton - September 23rd - October 1st 2008 - Mixed Media/Exploring Possibilities
Those of you who are familiar with the work of Vince Tutton realize that, as well as respecting the importance of developing skills in the use of a single medium, he finds the use of combinations of pencil, charcoal, chalk pastel, gouache, acrylics, photographs and writing the ideal vehicle for his present work.

The intention of this workshop is to allow participants to explore the many possibilities offered by such media. Introductory experimental sessions will be offered to encourage the use of the media in ongoing personal explorations. Vince fully expects that some of you may prefer to concentrate on the use of just one drawing or painting technique to develop your ideas; appropriate tuition will be provided for this.

Vince Tutton has taught in secondary school, Colleges of Further Education, Community Art, Therapy in Hospital. 1986/7 he was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship, USA/UK Exchange Programme, Miami and 1994/5 The Residency in Painting at Foundation Valparaiso, Spain. Vince has exhibited his work widely in the UK and abroad.
