You will find that your art holiday is structured but gives everyone the freedom to develop their talents to the fullest. This has been found to work well with both those who have some experience and equally the beginner. Fear is the main enemy of self-expression, and so surprisingly simple techniques and guide-lines are taught to provide a safety-net to support confidence. Everyone can learn to draw, and everyone can always improve!
Different topics covered include colour mixing, tone, perspective, composition, special effects and mixed media. A handout is provided for later reference. A minibus takes the group to the selected painting site for the day. It is recommended that you spend the morning applying the ideas from the studio session, then after a good picnic lunch you are free to experiment.
Jeni Caruana, your Tutor, does not paint during the course, believing that it is far more valuable to discover your own way of working than to watch and copy demonstrations. This also means that she is always on hand to help and encourage.
Back at the Art Centre, we look at the day’s work over a welcome cup of tea. The most important achievement is to feel that you have learnt something, not to have produced a masterpiece (although that tends to happen along the way).
Paint for yourself and no-one else…….looking forward to the next picture is what makes painting such an endless source of pleasure.
Sketching and Watercolour
This holiday is designed for the beginner and amateur artist. Artists arrive on day 1 and depart on day 8. There are five days sketching and one free day. Each day starts with one hour in the studio covering a different topic, which is then put into practice outside. This holiday covers all the basics of successful painting such as, good drawing, tone, perspective, colour mixing etc. Although the holiday is carefully structured, everyone is encouraged to explore the full range of their abilities.
Watercolour Plus
There is an hour in the studio as a prelude to each days painting. This holiday will introduce a freer approach to painting with watercolours, using a big brush and mixed media. Strong drawing is still encouraged and individuality is encouraged. Artists arrive on Day 1 and depart on Day 10. There are six days painting and two free days. Jeni, your Tutor, will be available throughout the painting days and does not paint during the holiday.
We would be delighted is like minded artists / potential artists could form a group, suggest dates, and we will organise a holiday to suit. If the group is 7 or more artists then Malta Art will discount 100% of the Malta Art costs for the leader of the group. This offer does not include hotel costs. The best times would be April (after Easter) and late September / October.

Your Hosts & Tutor
Malta Art is a company set up by Ronnie Channer with the sole purpose of running watercolour holidays in Malta. Ronnie and Esme Channer live in a 350 year old farmhouse in the village of Siggiewe. Ronnie will meet all artists at the airport and looks after the group whilst joining in the sketching. This ensures personal attention throughout your stay in Malta.
Jeni has established herself as an outstanding Tutor for Malta Art over the last two years. She studied art in England at Uxbridge, Hull and Harrow before settling in Malta in 1978 where she has held regular exhibitions of her work and participated in joint, group and collective exhibitions in Malta and abroad. Her paintings hang in public and private collections in Malta and abroad, including the British High Commission and the head offices of two major banks in Malta.
Jeni’s courses are for the timorous, the keen and those who wish to improve their skills. All on her courses are encouraged to develop their talents to the full. Her style of teaching is relaxed and encouraging and the courses, informal and fun.
Location
The countryside in Malta is vibrant with colour in the Spring and Autumn. All provide a fascinating variety for both the artist and a non-painting partner or friend. We will be hosting your holiday and will ensure that you are welcomed and well looked after throughout your stay.
We have chosen months for our holidays when the weather is normally kind and warm without being too hot. There could be rain but it does not last too long.
