Overview
Each day we'll help you to discover the characteristic way of life of the Provencal people. You will visit some traditional markets of this region offering all the local produce for which Provence is renowned - from olive oil to fine wines and cheeses. Also on the itinerary will be visits to the surrounding countryside and neighbouring villages; and all the while you will be absorbing the colours, the flavours and the perfumes that are the very essence of Provence.

Each day includes free time after lunch (12.30) for you to enjoy the area at your leisure and our hands-on cooking class which starts at 5pm. This is followed by aperitifs and diner at 8pm.

The following is an example of the first 5 days of our 7 day program:

Saturday: Guests are welcomed and shown their rooms. Lunch is offered and the itinerary is discussed. Guests are able to arrive at any time of the day. There is free time in the afternoon to rest, go for a walk or to discover the village. Dinner is served at about 8 PM.

Sunday: After a leisurely breakfast we depart for the country market of Coustellet, where the local produce for all our cooking is purchased and where we will visit the Lavander Museum. Afterwards we'll relax with drinks in a local café, followed by free time during the afternoon.
Monday: Leave for the village of Menerbes, an ancient fortified town which was once a Protestant centre in the Vaucluse. Here too can be found the corkscrew museum, which displays history, sociology, technology and the arts from the 17th century to today. Time allowing, we'll also visit the ancient village "Oppède le Vieux" and an olive Mill. From there on to the winery "Domaine de la citadelle" for some wine tasting
Over lunch we'll be conducting some cheese tasting.
Tuesday: Visit the Borie village at Gordes and the dry stone shelters built by the local peasants and shepherds. Bories date back to the 13 century. Following this we will visit the village of Gordes itself, the local market and its castle which was rebuilt in the mid 16th century. Dominating the valley of the Coulon, this village was built on a spur of mountain range.

Wednesday: Visit the Abbey of Senanque, a superb roman building, located in the heart of the small valley of the Senancole; a place for meditation thanks to the silence and the surrounding beauty.

Visit Roussillon; a picturesque hilltop village perched on a bed of red and yellow ochre, which has been used to colour the facades of its local buildings for many hundreds of years. Also worth a visit is the Provençal Colorado on the southern side of the Doua Valley, where there are some spectacular walks through some old ochre quarries.

Did you know we also run a variant on the above which combines cooking with a walking and hiking holiday in Provence?

Patrick & Babeth will be delighted to welcome you into 'their' Provence and will make every effort to make sure your stay is unforgettable and full of new surprises and visits.

Tutor
Your Chef Patrick Payet’s background includes managing Club Med and numerous Sheraton Hotels throughout the tropics, graduating from the school of Roger Vergé, and running his restaurant “Le Tonneau” for 17 years in the town of Goult, Provence. He has even had a cameo mention in Peter Mayle’s famous book, A Year in Provence as well as a small role in an upcoming Russell Crowe movie to be released the summer of 2006. Chef Payet and his team will be your constant companions beyond the kitchen, accompanying the excursions, acting as guide and cultural liaisons, and offering great suggestions for when you want to go off on your own. His program offers not only the opportunity to learn to cook, but also the chance to experience the culture of the area. Patrick often invites his local friends to join the group for dinner for a true and personal Provencal atmosphere.

Location
The Luberon area is one of the most typical and beautiful of Provence. Here you’ll find fields of lavender and vineyards, magnificent castles and churches, sunny village squares where Frenchmen in berets play boules, and friends sit in outdoor cafes. There are also expanses of wild natural beauty such as the ochre canyons, cedar forest, rivers, and valleys. Charming villages sprawl over hilltops that overlook the picturesque valleys.
