The rides
A wonderful holiday experience - riding on horseback across Scotland and seeing the Scottish scenery as you have never seen it before! This is a trail ride with a difference - each day you will move on to new sights and sounds and your accomodation each night in good quality hotels will provide exactly what you need to enjoy your holiday to it's utmost. Do not miss this opportunity for a holiday of a lifetime! From the rolling farmland of Aberdeenshire to the heathery heights of the Cairngorms, winding down to Loch Ness and beyond to the mountainous grandeur of Kintail.

Your 200 mile journey across Scotland will begin at a small farm in Glass, in a wooded glen on the banks of the river Deveron near Huntly, Aberdeenshire. The farm lies on the edge of the Grampian Mountains - a vast area of heather covered moors and mountains - bounded by the river Spey, which culminates in the 4000ft summits of the Cairngorm mountains. We ride at a brisk pace and encounter natural obstacles from flooded rivers, to peat bogs and steep passes.

The Long Ride - 200 miles
Eight days riding, one rest day, ten nights accommodation. On your first four days you will ride across the remote area of the Eastern Highlands with its varied scenery and surprisingly fast riding. You can take either the northern route around Speyside or the southern route via Glen Feshie. After a rest day we will ride into the Western Highlands with a dramatic change in scenery to finish in mountainous region of Kintail. The rounded heather-covered hills of the East are replaced by the spectacular craggy peaks of the West, as we ride through some of the most beautiful glens in Scotland.

The Short Ride - 100 miles
Four days riding, five nights accommodation. The four day ride offers you the opportunity to ride the East or West part of the long ride; from Glass to Kingussie, or Kingussie to Kintail. You can always return at another time to complete the other half of the ride.

It is important that you are an experienced rider. We ride as fast as the terrain will allow and this means you must be comfortable at all paces and be able to control a horse which is anticipating the thrill of a canter or gallop.

Should you decide to join us we would advise booking early as the rides fill up quickly since we have been listed among the top ten rides in the world. We have achieved a 30 per cent repeat rate in previous years and should you wish to talk to someone who has already done the ride please call us and we can put you in touch. You might think this holiday is expensive but it is all inclusive offering great value for money. We are sure that once you've experienced Highland Horseback you'll want to come back for more.

Your Guides
Highland Horseback has existed as a long distance trail riding business for over 25 years. It's reputation has been built on two main strands: providing an unforgettable experience of the amazing scenery of the Scottish Highlands and establishing a bond between horse and rider which continues long after the experience has been completed!

The business is run by Fiona and Ken Hamilton. We take it in turns to lead the rides ourselves while the other one drives the back-up minibus. We also have a few friends who are very keen to help out as required. Stephen and Kathryn, our children, love to be involved as much as school allows them and we find everything runs much more efficiently when they are around. We all share a love of the horses and therefore enjoy seeing the horses having a good time on the ride too.

We want to give you, our guests, the experience of a lifetime. Our main satisfaction comes from seeing the expression of delight on the faces of people who feel that they have taken on the challenge?.. and succeeded .

Accommodation
For accommodation we use 12 hotels in all. An example is the Rowan Tree Country Hotel which is situated just 2 miles south of Aviemore alongside the old Great North Road, no more than 2 minutes from the southerly Aviemore turning off the new A9. The Rowan Tree offers a real alternative, a cosy home from home. Ooriginally built in the 1700's as a Coaching Inn it overlooks tranquil Loch Alvie just south of Aviemore in the heart of the Cairngorms. It is a world apart but not remote.

Where are we?
We are located about and hour and twenty minutes north west of Aberdeen and around 2 hours east of Inverness by road. We will happily help you with advice on travel arrangements.
