Holiday / Activity Overview:

Enjoy an adventure through miles of beautiful countryside on horseback… We offer riding just for intermediate to experienced riders, from one hour hacks to weekend breaks and week-long holidays. We have wonderful riding here through fields, woods and beaches, and lovely horses for you to meet.

We give you a trail riding adventure across the Somerset countryside, riding on your horse or ours...

* Your horse will carry your belongings in our roomy saddlebags
* We plan everything, so you can follow our carefully-prepared maps, or hire a guide to do the navigating for you
* You’ll ride across the Quantocks, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with its great variety of beaches, moors, fields and woods
* Each night you’ll be welcomed at a different country hotel, and sample the best of local West Country food
* You’ll wake up to a delicious English breakfast, gather your horse and saddlebags and continue on the trail

Here's an example of one of our 3 day rides: Quantock Trail – 3 days riding, 2 nights

* Day one will take you from the archetypal Quantock hamlet of Farringdon, through forests, farms and hills to the stunning village of West Bagborough, where a most welcoming farmhouse awaits you and your trusty mount.
* Day two sees you ride up the valley and onto the very top of the Quantock Hills. From here we will descend to the picturesque village of Holford, rise up to an iron-age fort and then skirt the edge of another hill before descending to Over Stowey for the night.
* Day three completes the circle to Farringdon via the southern hills of the Quantocks, some beautiful parkland and a glimpse of the wild horses if you are lucky!

If you are coming on your own, and want to ride out on your own, that’s absolutely fine, and a guide will take you on your expedition. If however you would like to join together with other riders, then please do contact us and let us know a selection of dates when you are free.

Horse Riding Guides

If you are riding our horses, your party must take a guide, the cost of which will be shared amongst you. This is to ensure the safety of all our guests and our horses. If you are riding your own horses, and there are at least two of you in your party, you can ride guided or unguided. Rates can be found here.

Guides travel with you, take care of the route finding, help you with horse care each evening and morning, and are generally your helpful friend.

Pricing information

To make things easy, our holidays are calculated on multiples of daily rates, which vary according to whether you bring your own horse or ride one of ours, share your room or have single occupancy, and whether you ride guided or unguided. If you are riding our horses, you must ride with a guide.

Your accommodation:

We know you will love the accommodation and food. At each stop we have arranged either stabling or pasture for your horses. So, when you arrive in the afternoon, either your guide (if you have booked one) or your host will be there to greet you and show you where everything is. You first untack and leave your equipment in a nice dry room provided for us. Then you feed the horses (food ready and waiting), and finally turn them out into their field or stable. In the morning, after breakfast you catch, feed and tack up horses in your own time and make your way back onto the trail.

About the local area:

Somerset is a wonderful county for riding. Wordsworth walked here, Coleridge wrote here - now you can find tranquility here too, on horseback.

All of our routes explore the wide area of Outstanding Natural Beauty called the Quantock Hills, and we will happily prepare a route to suit you, no matter how long or short.

How to Get Here:

By road from the north
* Exit the M5 at junction 24 and head south on the A38, signposted Taunton.
* You will shortly start driving through North Petherton.
* After you pass the church on your left, look out for a corner shop called McColl’s on your right and take the right-hand turn at this shop.
* This little street will quickly come to a junction, where you will turn left and then immediately right, onto Cliff Road.
* Continue on this lane all the way out of North Petherton and into the countryside.
* Take no turnings, but continue for 1.5 miles until you see the Travels on Horseback sign on your right hand side - you have arrived.

By road from the south
* Exit the M5 on junction 25 and head north on the A38 towards Bridgwater.
* After a couple of miles you will start seeing signs on your left to Thurloxton.
* Ignore all the signs until you have passed the big Thurloxton Fruit Growers Association farm on your left, then take the next left, 200m up the road.
* Drive on this narrow lane into the village of Thurloxton, and take the first right hand turn, where there is a big wooden house on your right.
* When this short lane ends in a T junction, turn right and then SECOND left.
* Keep going straight ahead, down a little hill and up the other side for about 1/4 mile, past Farringdon Farm on your right, until you see the Travels on Horseback sign on your left - you have arrived.
